Indian Cricket's World Cup Debacle

Cricket is a passion in India. Cricket players are always treated as Gods. That is why when India lost a match against Bangladesh at the on going Cricket World Cup 2007, cricket fans went on rampage. There were lot of protests on the streets. The images of their idols were defaced and even some of them burnt effigies of their idols. Most of the fans know that Cricket is a game of glorious uncertainties. Yet when India losses, it is always not glorious to them. Considering Indians fans passion for the game, their reaction is understandable though not justifiable. No Indian fan on his wildest dream would have thought that India would lose to the babes of world cricket Bangladesh. What was more shocking for them that by losing to Bangladesh India lost a vital opportunity to get in to the Super 8 stage. There was no denying that India played badly as their top batsmen misfired. In cricket it always happens. But that defeat deprived India its world cup hunt is really pathetic.

I am not defending India for their poor performance. Yet when I look into the format of the world cup, I feel something uneasy over the way the ICC formatted the match. I strongly feel that both India and Pakistan has the potential and deserved to be in the super 8 stage. Yet both of them failed due to their loss to a less potential team. Everybody knows how Bangladesh and Ireland suffered a humiliating defeat in the hands of other super 8 teams. Had India and Pakistan were there, certainly the super 8 stages matches would have been more competitive and interesting.

The world cup format would have been better if the teams at the league stage given opportunity to play the other team twice. I strongly believe that it will deprive the less potential teams to go to the other stage. You can win a match by fluke once but not twice.

I hope ICC would have realized their mistake and make necessary improvements in the formatting at least in the next world cup. Fans always like to watch contests with equally potential teams.
